Dinosaurs Love Being Number One

On March 10th, Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedman hit the number one spot in the Kids' section of the Barnes and Noble e-book store. Claire joins us today to talk about her book.

Claire, let's start with a summary of Dinosaurs Love Underpants.

This book explains how dinosaurs became extinct. Basically they were all wiped out because of.....underpants!!!! Obviously this is a very serious book and not at all silly!!!

Tell us briefly about your path to publication: Traditional or independent? Recently or further in the past?

I began writing after joining a creative writing class over 15 years ago. I still go to the same class each week - it's a great place to share ideas and writing thoughts. I never planned to become a writer - it just happened by chance. I'm so glad it did.

I got published by perserverance. I sent lots and lots of story ideas to various publishers, and they were all rejected, but I got good feedback from the editors. I took note of what they said, and re-wrote accordingly. Eventually after nearly 2 years, my first picture book text was accepted.

I tried for an agent at first, but it is hard for an unpublished author to get representation. I now find I don't need an agent and prefer to work alone.

Which came first -- the print version of your book, or the electronic version?

Print came first - the e-book version was the result of the demands for new media versions.

Do you think e-publishing will eventually take over print publishing? Why or why not?

I really hope that e-publishing won't take over print publishing. There is nothing more special than the feeling of opening a brand new book (or an old well thumbed copy) and turning the pages and holding the book in your hands. Not to mention owning a lovely bookshelf of your favourite books.

E-publishing is great - but it doesn't offer the hands on experince in my opinion.
